The history of Indian jewellery is as old as the history of the
country itself. Every Indian woman uses jewellery. There are no women in India
who do not love jewellery. Indian women like gifts of jewellery.
Indian jewellery is exclusive in its unique design. In all
types of classical dances jewellery is the most important part. Classical dances including Kathak, Kuchipudi,
Bharatnatyam, etc. give due importance to jewelry in presenting the dancers.
Classical Indian dance jewellery is also known as temple jewellery. Indian jewellery is made with emeralds,
diamonds, pearls and precious and semi-precious stones since days bygone.
Indian jewellery consists mainly of three types: bridal
jewellery, spiritual jewelry and temple jewellery. Temple jewellery is used by
classical dance performers. This jewellery Includes Necklace Set, Earring, Armlets (upper
arm bracelets), Bangles, Rings, Belly chains, Breastplates, Body piercing
jewellery, Anklets (ankle bracelets), Pendants, and Emblems.
In classical Indian dances, the jewellery used are earrings, moon and sun shaped hair ornaments, nose rings, necklaces, short maalas, bangles, anklets (ghungroo).
